Perry was born July 25, 1968 in Chicago in Illinois. She was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. Perry was forbidden to start acting by her parents until she reached adulthood, as they feared the anxiety it could result in. Perry admitted that she wasn't confident in her acting during high school. She began doing it to meet new people at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she was offered small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness led Perry back to California which was where theatre jobs were in demand. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway with her mother. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning film Anna Christie together with her in the year 2015. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. In 2017, she was a part-time character in the ABC political drama Scandal that starred her father. The same year she was cast as a younger version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger model of the mother's character. The role was given by audition regardless of the fact that she has a family tie with the character.
